President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s strong commitment to the goals and activities of ECOWAS during the regional bloc’s 50th anniversary celebration held on Wednesday in Lagos.
Addressing dignitaries, the ECOWAS Chair emphasized that regional cooperation is a continuous effort and that restoring democracy remains a core priority. He highlighted ECOWAS’s track record in electoral observation missions, agricultural programs, trade facilitation, and infrastructure development across member states.
Tinubu called for stronger execution of regional policies to tackle ongoing socio-political issues and urged greater investment in the sub region’s youth, particularly through education and healthcare.
He paid tribute to General Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria’s former military head of state and the last surviving founding leader of ECOWAS, and acknowledged the contributions of past and present ECOWAS leaders.
He encouraged young people across the region to take active roles in community programs, assuring them of a future with increasing leadership responsibilities within the organization.
