Pressure is mounting from civil society, media and human rights organisations for the release of Nigerien journalist Moussa Kaka, who has been missing for one month with no verified information on his whereabouts.
Kaka, director-general of Radio and Television Sarraounia (RTS) and a former REI correspondent, was reported missing on August 31.
G25-Niger, a coalition of Nigerien civil society and media organisations, has demanded Kaka’s immediate and unconditional release and called on authorities to clarify his whereabouts and ensure his safety.
The group alleges that Kaka may have been taken by security services after his vehicle was stopped near the Gadafawa roundabout in Niamey. The allegation has not been independently verified, while Nigerien authorities have not publicly provided a detailed account of his disappearance.
The case has renewed concerns among civil society and media organisations over the treatment of journalists and reported disappearances since Niger’s 2023 military takeover.
