The Government of Senegal has officially endorsed former President Macky Sall’s candidacy for the position of United Nations Secretary-General.
In a statement released by the Ministry of African Integration and Foreign Affairs, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye announced that Senegal would give its full support to Sall’s campaign following their meeting at the Presidential Palace on July 17.
The president has also directed the government and Senegal’s diplomatic missions worldwide to actively promote Sall’s candidacy among United Nations member states.
Macky Sall welcomed the endorsement, describing his discussions with President Faye as cordial and constructive, with both leaders exchanging views on key global issues.
The former president has intensified his diplomatic campaign in recent weeks, holding consultations with leaders in The Gambia, China and Greece, as well as permanent representatives at the United Nations in New York.
Six candidates are officially contesting to succeed António Guterres as UN Secretary-General, with the Security Council expected to begin consultations before recommending a candidate to the General Assembly.
