Senegal has officially presented in Bissau its ECOWAS mediation mandate to help Guinea-Bissau achieve a swift return to constitutional order.
Senegalese Minister of African Integration and Foreign Affairs Cheikh Niang and Minister of Armed Forces Yankoba Diémé led the delegation, following the decision of the 69th ECOWAS Ordinary Summit held on July 19 in Freetown.
The delegation met with Guinea-Bissau’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Fatumata Jau, Prime Minister Ilídio Vieira Té and Transition President General Horta N’Tam to discuss the framework and next steps of the mediation.
The Guinea-Bissau transition authorities welcomed Senegal’s initiative and expressed their willingness to cooperate with Dakar in the mediation process.
The mission marks the formal beginning of Senegal’s role as ECOWAS mediator, with the objective of promoting dialogue with the transition authorities and helping create the conditions for a peaceful and rapid restoration of constitutional governance.
