Senegal has condemned new U.S. sanctions against officials of the International Criminal Court (ICC), including Senegalese national Abdoulaye Seye, a member of the Court’s Office of the Prosecutor.
In a statement, the Senegalese government said it was “deeply concerned” by the measures announced on August 18, 2026, stressing that Seye is also Senegal’s candidate for an ICC judgeship.
Dakar reaffirmed its support for the ICC, describing the court as a key institution in the fight against impunity and a cornerstone of international criminal justice. It warned that measures targeting ICC personnel could undermine the Court’s independence and ability to carry out its mandate.
Senegal expressed its full solidarity with Seye and other ICC officials affected by the sanctions, saying international judicial officials should be able to perform their duties independently and without pressure.
The government said it would consult with African and international partners to defend the Court’s independence and called for dialogue, mutual respect and international cooperation.
