Senegal Launches ‘Safe Suburb’ Initiative to Combat Insecurity

Senegalese authorities on Tuesday, unveiled the “Safe Suburb” project, a comprehensive initiative designed to address security concerns by combining advanced video surveillance with active community engagement.

Project coordinator Abdou Rahim Fall announced that the initiative will deploy 5,000 young people across three key departments, focusing on neighbourhoods most vulnerable to violence. These efforts aim to improve safety and reduce crime in the suburbs.

The project will integrate both human resources and electronic monitoring systems. Rahim Fall highlighted that the three targeted departments, with a combined population of around 1.57 million, will benefit from increased surveillance and community involvement.

Ahmadou Coumba Ndiaye, prefect of the Guédiawaye department, praised the initiative, stating that the installation of surveillance cameras, alongside the mobilization of local youth, will significantly enhance neighborhood monitoring and act as a strong deterrent to criminals.

Local authorities emphasized the importance of collaboration between security forces, local government, and community leaders to ensure the project’s success and foster safer urban environments.
