Senegal strengthens security presence in the east amid rising regional threats

Senegal has reinforced its security system in the eastern region with the inauguration of three new support points for the Rapid Action Surveillance and Intervention Group (GARSI-Sahel) in Saraya, Kédougou region.

The move, led by authorities including Birame Diop, aims to improve rapid response capacity and strengthen surveillance in a strategic border area increasingly exposed to instability.

This deployment comes against a backdrop of growing security concerns linked to jihadist activity in neighboring Mali, particularly by groups such as JNIM, as well as rising crime and environmental pressures in border communities.

Authorities say the new infrastructure will enhance territorial control, support local populations, and form part of a broader strategy to stabilize eastern Senegal.
