Nigeria Endorses the Proliferation Security Initiative

The Nigerian government has officially endorsed the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) following sustained engagement with the United States.

A statement from the U.S. Department of State welcomed Nigeria’s participation and expressed the U.S. government’s commitment to working with Nigeria to advance PSI’s counterproliferation objectives and uphold its Statement of Interdiction Principles.

With this endorsement, Nigeria becomes the 116th country to join the Initiative. PSI-endorsing nations are dedicated to preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), their delivery systems, and related materials to both state and non-state actors of concern.

Expanding global participation in PSI strengthens security efforts by enhancing the ability to intercept WMD-related transfers that pose threats.

The Initiative’s continued growth highlights U.S. leadership in global security and reinforces its commitment to preventing WMD proliferation, ultimately reducing the risk of their use and ensuring long-term safety and stability.
