Senegalese President Faye Dismisses Rift Speculation with Prime Minister Sonko

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has dismissed rumors of discord with Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, following recent comments by Sonko that raised concerns about cohesion at the top level of government.

On Friday, Sonko had called for stronger leadership and urged an end to personal attacks against him, amid rising criticism from commentators linked to the opposition.

Speaking on Monday while receiving the National Dialogue report on the political system, President Faye reaffirmed that there is no conflict between him and Sonko, describing their bond as one of friendship and mutual purpose.

He emphasized the need to stay focused on addressing the economic and social challenges facing the nation.

Faye, who was nominated by Sonko as the PASTEF party’s candidate, won the March 2024 presidential election in the first round, defeating the ruling coalition’s candidate.
