Senegal’s New Prime Minister Promises ‘Change of Method,’ Not Change of Direction

Senegal’s New Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Mohamed Lo pledged to continue the reform agenda of Senegal while introducing what he described as “a change of method” in governance following his appointment by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

Speaking shortly after replacing Ousmane Sonko on Monday evening, the new head of government said his nomination did not represent a break from the commitments made since the ruling coalition came to power in 2024. Instead, he promised stronger institutional coherence and more effective government action.

Lo, who previously served as Minister-Secretary General of the Government and later as Minister of State overseeing the Senegal 2050 Agenda, described the role as a “priestly duty” and highlighted his experience within the Central Bank of West African States.

The new prime minister praised the achievements of Ousmane Sonko’s administration, including the national transformation agenda and economic recovery initiatives, while acknowledging the major challenges facing the country.

He pointed to pressure on public finances, rising energy costs linked to the Middle East crisis, social tensions and growing insecurity in the sub-region. Ahmadou Al Aminou Mohamed Lo reaffirmed that all public policies would remain aligned with the Senegal 2050 vision aimed at building “a sovereign, just and prosperous Senegal.”

He also called for national unity involving youth, women, civil society, religious leaders and the diaspora, while reassuring investors and international partners that Senegal remains “a safe and reliable country.”

His appointment comes amid a wider political reshuffle marked by Ousmane Sonko’s planned return to parliament and the expected election of a new National Assembly president following the resignation of El Malick Ndiaye.
