Sixteen inmates escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State, after breaching the facility’s security in the early hours of August 12, 2025.
The escapees overpowered personnel on duty, injuring five officers, two of whom are in serious condition and receiving treatment at a government hospital.
Seven of the fugitives have been recaptured, while efforts continue, in collaboration with other security agencies, to apprehend the remaining nine.
The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, visited the facility, ordered a full investigation, and warned that any staff found complicit would face disciplinary action.
The public has been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
This incident adds to a series of jailbreaks in Nigeria in recent years, including mass escapes from prisons in Suleja, Kuje, Imo, and Oyo states between 2021 and 2024.
