Soldier Killed, Three Injured in Armed Attack on Niger National Guard in Agadez

A Nigerien soldier was killed and three others wounded on Tuesday when armed men attacked two Niger National Guard positions in the Agadez region.

The assault, carried out by gunmen in seven vehicles, targeted the Aderbissanat patrol unit and the Abalama base, which secures the Zinder–Agadez road.

Security forces repelled the attack, killing two assailants, capturing another, and seizing a cache of weapons including FM80 machine guns, RPGs, AK47s, and communication devices.

Authorities confirmed that Governor Ibrah Boulama Issa visited the injured soldiers at the regional hospital, though the army has not disclosed the attackers’ identities.

The Agadez region, which borders Algeria and Libya, has witnessed growing insecurity since the July 2023 coup that toppled President Mohamed Bazoum.

New political-military groups, notably the Patriotic Liberation Front (FPL) and the Patriotic Front for Justice (FPJ), have claimed responsibility for several attacks in the area.

The FPL has targeted Niger’s oil pipeline to Benin, while the FPJ was behind the June 2024 kidnapping of the Prefect of Bilma and five others, who remain in captivity.
