Sudan has inaugurated its first embassy in Mali, marking a new chapter in diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Ambassador Khaid Abdelgadir Shukri formally presented his credentials in Bamako on September 18, 2025, months after Sudan’s leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, visited Mali.
Malian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop welcomed the Sudanese envoy during a ceremony that underscored commitments made under a cooperation protocol signed in June 2024. The agreement provided for the establishment of a Sudanese embassy in Bamako and the resumption of Malian consular activities in Khartoum.
The move follows al-Burhan’s January 2025 visit to Bamako, where both sides agreed to set up a Grand Joint Cooperation Commission aimed at boosting political and economic ties.
Talks between Abdoulaye Diop and Ambassador Shukri centered on regional peace and security, as well as advancing South-South cooperation. Both governments emphasized the importance of African solidarity at a time when the Sahel faces growing instability.
Authorities from both sides expressed determination to convene the first session of the Grand Joint Committee soon, with the goal of translating this new partnership into tangible cooperation.
