Mali’s Morila mine came under attack by suspected jihadists over the weekend, resulting in the destruction of equipment. Seven employees were taken hostage but were later released, according to eyewitnesses.
Armed men attacked the mine on Saturday. US-based Flagship Gold, which signed an investment agreement last year, confirmed the incident through a spokesperson for Mali’s mines ministry and another person familiar with the matter.
Flagship Gold did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
No mine employees were killed, the ministry spokesperson said, adding that the army has since taken control of the situation and is conducting a sweep of the area.
New York-based Flagship Gold, which was incorporated in June 2024, signed a partnership agreement with Mali’s state-owned mining company in October to restart production at the Morila gold mine.
According to the mines ministry, the site holds estimated reserves of 2.5 million ounces.
