U.S. President Donald Trump has reaffirmed America’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara in an official message addressed to King Mohammed VI, marking the 26th anniversary of his accession to the throne.
In the letter, Trump confirmed the continuation of the position first announced in December 2020, stating that “the United States of America recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara.” He further emphasised that Morocco’s autonomy plan remains “the only serious, credible, and realistic basis” for achieving a durable resolution to the long-standing dispute.
This message aligns with the stance taken by key figures within Trump’s administration, including envoys Richard Duke Buchan and Massad Boulos, who have echoed the same position in recent months. It also underscores ongoing U.S. support for the autonomy initiative within the framework of the United Nations-led political process.
Alongside the statement, Trump extended congratulations to both the King and the Moroccan people, highlighting the strength of the strategic partnership between Washington and Rabat. He noted the importance of shared priorities, such as promoting regional peace, combating terrorism, and enhancing economic cooperation. Trump also referenced the Abraham Accords as a means of deepening regional stability and opening new avenues for collaboration.
Concluding the letter, the U.S. President expressed his hope for continued cooperation between the two countries, with a focus on fostering peace and security in North Africa and beyond.
