Togo and Belarus have taken a major step toward closer diplomatic and economic cooperation following an official visit to Lomé by Belarusian Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov.
The high-level meeting with the President of the Council of Togo, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, marked the first-ever visit by a Belarusian foreign minister to the West African nation, signaling a renewed commitment to strengthening relations between Lomé and Minsk.
Discussions centered on expanding collaboration in key sectors including agriculture, technology, industry, and logistics, with both countries seeking to establish a structured and lasting partnership framework.
Belarus also expressed interest in boosting its maritime footprint by leveraging Togo’s strategic position as an entry point into African markets, particularly through the Port of Lomé, a major regional logistics hub.
Beyond economic ambitions, the talks covered pressing international concerns, notably the peaceful resolution of global conflicts and the promotion of stability worldwide, where both nations found common ground.
The visit concluded with the signing of two significant agreements: a memorandum of understanding to institutionalize regular consultations between their foreign ministries and a visa waiver arrangement for holders of diplomatic and service passports.
These agreements underscore a shared determination to solidify institutional cooperation and elevate Togolese-Belarusian relations to a new strategic level.
