Burkina Faso Reaffirms Secularism and National Unity During Eid Celebration

Authorities in Burkina Faso used the celebration of Eid al-Adha in Ouagadougou to reaffirm the secular character of the state and call for national cohesion amid underlying tensions within parts of the Muslim community.

A government delegation led by Pingdwendé Gilbert Ouédraogo attended the Tabaski prayer at the Place de la Nation, where officials emphasized unity and peaceful coexistence among citizens regardless of religious affiliation.

Speaking to the press after the prayers, Ouédraogo described Burkina Faso as “one and indivisible” and urged citizens to work collectively toward strengthening social harmony.

The government’s participation in the religious gathering reflects ongoing efforts to maintain dialogue with faith-based organizations, which authorities consider important partners in preserving national stability.

The remarks came shortly after the Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina Faso and the Sunni Movement appealed for calm following the arrest of Mohamed Ishaq Kindo under circumstances that have not yet been officially clarified.
