ment to Economic Community of West African States while advocating for renewed dialogue and cooperation with the Alliance of Sahel States bloc made up of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.
Speaking shortly after his inauguration, the Beninese leader stressed the need for regional unity in confronting terrorism and security challenges across the subregion.
His remarks came during a meeting in Cotonou with Omar Alieu Touray, where discussions focused on regional stability, economic integration and security cooperation.
Wadagni’s position signals a possible easing of tensions between Benin and Niger following months of strained relations linked to the 2023 coup in Niamey.
Niger had previously accused Benin of hosting foreign military bases intended to destabilize the country, allegations denied by Cotonou.
The dispute also contributed to the prolonged closure of the border between both nations, disrupting trade and the transit of Nigerien oil through the port of Cotonou.
During his inauguration ceremony, attended by senior delegations from the AES countries including Abdoulaye Diop, Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré and Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, Wadagni called for cooperation based on “stability, dialogue and respect,” saying West African countries must work together to confront regional threats and strengthen integration.
