PASTEF Sets Conditions for Cooperation as Senegal’s Political Landscape Shifts

PASTEF has declared that its participation in the formation of the new government will depend on clear programmatic guarantees, as Senegal undergoes a significant institutional reshuffle marked by changes in both the executive and legislative branches.

In a statement released by its Executive Committee on May 26, 2026, the party confirmed that consultations have begun with presidential services regarding the cabinet formation under newly appointed Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Mohamed Lo.

PASTEF stressed that any engagement with the state must be anchored in “frank and responsible collaboration,” while insisting on strict adherence to the political platform that brought it to power in 2024. 

The party listed several key conditions, including control of living costs, transparency in public debt management, continuation of strategic contract renegotiations, stronger anti-corruption measures, and reforms in judicial governance and ministerial allocations.

It also warned that internal consultations must be conducted only through authorized party structures, rejecting individual negotiations with members.

The statement comes amid broader political realignments, including the appointment of Lo as Prime Minister and the election of Ousmane Sonko as head of the National Assembly following a near-unanimous parliamentary vote.

Sonko, in his inaugural address, pledged stronger legislative oversight of government action, while the new Prime Minister insisted his appointment signals a “change of method” rather
