Guinea Polls Deemed Peaceful as GMD Takes Early Lead in Legislative and Municipal Elections

Guinea‘s legislative and municipal elections held on May 31 were conducted in a peaceful and orderly atmosphere, according to a joint assessment by election observation missions from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU), and the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF).

In a statement issued after the vote, the missions said polling operations largely complied with electoral laws and praised the calm environment in which citizens cast their ballots.

The observers also urged political actors to resolve any disputes through dialogue and legal mechanisms while reaffirming their support for Guinea’s democratic transition.

As the General Directorate of Elections continues releasing provisional results, the Generation for Modernity and Development (GMD) movement has emerged as the frontrunner in several constituencies across the country.

Early results show the party leading in areas including Mandiana, Boké, Nzérékoré, Macenta, Guéckédou, Kouroussa, and Fria, although independent candidates and rival political groups have performed strongly in some localities.

Nearly seven million voters participated in the dual election to choose 147 members of the future National Assembly and municipal councillors, in a vote widely seen as a key milestone in Guinea’s ongoing institutional normalization process.
