The Nigerien government has provisionally stripped opposition figure Mariama Djibrine, popularly known as Mayra, of her Nigerien nationality as part of its ongoing crackdown on critics and political opponents.
A decree signed by CNSP President General Abdourahamane Tiani accuses Djibrine of disseminating information likely to disturb public order, inciting rebellion, and colluding with a foreign power.
The decision, announced by the General Secretariat of the Government, adds to a growing list of measures targeting individuals accused of threatening state security since the military takeover in July 2023.
The move follows similar actions taken against several former officials and allies of ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, including former ministers Hassoumi Massoudou and Alkache Alhada, who face charges of treason and conspiracy against the state.
The sanctions are based on ordinances adopted in 2024 establishing a register of persons accused of terrorism-related offences or acts deemed harmful to the nation’s strategic interests.
Bazoum, who was removed from office during the 2023 coup, remains in detention.
