Ghana to Begin Final Mass Repatriation of Citizens from South Africa

The Government of Ghana will begin another phase of evacuating its citizens from South Africa on July 25, targeting nearly 900 Ghanaians who have voluntarily registered to return home.

Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quashie, said the exercise follows previous successful repatriation efforts launched after xenophobic attacks left many Ghanaians stranded in churches, hotels and with relatives.

He said the operation has been approved by South African authorities and will follow the same procedures used in earlier evacuations.

Quashie said only individuals who have already been registered and screened will be eligible for the flights, which will operate daily until all registered citizens are returned to Ghana.

He added that this will be the final government-sponsored mass evacuation, after which any future repatriation requests will be handled on a case-by-case basis through consular services.

He also urged Ghanaians not to travel to the High Commission without prior arrangements, stressing the need to follow established procedures to ensure a smooth operation.
