AES Experts Meet to Harmonize Position Ahead of Future ECOWAS Negotiations

Experts from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have begun technical consultations aimed at developing a common position for the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) ahead of future discussions with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The meeting seeks to harmonize the positions of the three member states and identify the Confederation’s strategic priorities as it prepares for a new phase in its relationship with the regional bloc.

Speaking at the meeting, Herman Toé, Secretary General of Burkina Faso’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the objective is to consolidate and align the positions of the AES countries while preparing arguments for upcoming negotiations with ECOWAS.

He stressed the importance of safeguarding the interests of citizens across the AES and the wider West African region, particularly preserving key gains such as the free movement of people and goods.

The discussions, attended by representatives from Niger and Mali, form part of ongoing efforts by the three countries to strengthen diplomatic coordination and present a united voice on major regional issues.

The outcomes of the meeting are expected to provide the foundation for a common AES position in future engagements with ECOWAS.
