The passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has drawn heartfelt tributes from African leaders, who praised his legacy as a dedicated statesman and reformer. Gambian President Adama Barrow extended condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Buhari’s family, and the Nigerian people, recognizing his role in promoting peace and regional stability.
Leaders from Guinea-Bissau, Chad, Sierra Leone, Senegal, and Ethiopia also joined in mourning, reflecting on Buhari’s influence across the continent and his contributions to governance and unity in the region.
Muhammadu Buhari, a career military officer, first ruled Nigeria from 1983 to 1985 and later returned through democratic elections in 2015.
Known for his tough stance against corruption and efforts to diversify Nigeria’s economy through agriculture, Buhari completed his second term in 2023 before being succeeded by Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In tribute, Nigeria’s Ministry of Communications announced that Vice President Kashim Shettima would travel to London to accompany Buhari’s body home, with national flags to be flown at half-mast.
