Alleged Cyber Fraud Suspect Sues Ghanaian Authorities and FBI Over Rights Abuses

A Ghanaian national, Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, has filed a human rights lawsuit at the High Court in Accra against the Government of Ghana and the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), accusing them of torture, unlawful detention, and severe violations of his constitutional rights following his arrest in December 2025 over alleged cyber fraud.

In the suit, filed at the Human Rights Division of the High Court, the 27-year-old is seeking GH₵10 million in compensation, naming the Minister for the Interior, the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Attorney-General, and the FBI as respondents.

He alleges that his arrest was carried out violently, that he was denied food, water, legal counsel, and due process, and that he was subjected to coercive interrogations by foreign agents despite their lack of enforcement authority under Ghanaian law.

According to court filings, Kumi further claims that while he was in custody, security agencies conducted unauthorized searches of his residence in Swedru and seized vehicles, electronic devices, jewellery, and other valuables without issuing an inventory or receipt.

He also accuses EOCO of prejudging his guilt by publicly describing him as a cybercriminal before any court ruling.

Beyond financial compensation, Kumi is asking the court to block the use of any evidence obtained during the alleged unlawful interrogations and searches, to prevent his extradition while the case is pending, and to bar the FBI from exercising investigative powers within Ghana.

The case, expected to be heard in February 2026, is seen as a potential test of the limits of foreign law enforcement involvement in Ghana and the constitutional protections afforded to citizens during transnational crime investigations.
