At Least 15 Rescued After Two-Storey Building Collapses in Nigeria’s Largest City

Emergency responders in Lagos, Nigeria, are continuing rescue efforts after a two-storey residential building collapsed early Monday in the Oyingbo area of the city.

According to Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS), authorities received a distress call in the early hours of the morning.

The building, located at 54 Cole Street, near Cemetery Bus Stop, had previously been marked as “distressed” before it gave way, trapping several occupants inside.

Adeseye confirmed that 15 people; including seven men, four women, and four children, were rescued with various injuries and taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Meta, and General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island.

Rescue operations, led by the Sari Iganmu Fire Station, remain underway as officials search for any additional victims possibly trapped under the debris.

Building collapses are a recurring problem in Nigeria, often linked to poor construction practices, aging structures, and heavy seasonal rains.
