AU Renews Engagement with Mali Amid Regional Security Shifts in the Sahel

The African Union (AU) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Mali, even as the country remains suspended from the bloc’s decision-making bodies following the 2021 breakdown of constitutional order.

The renewed engagement comes days after the AU Commission Chairperson urged the international community to take stronger action against escalating terrorism in the Sahel.

The development followed a high-level meeting on Monday, between Mali’s Foreign Minister, Abdoulaye Diop, and the newly appointed Special Representative of the AU Commission Chairperson, Dr. Mamadou Tangara.

The talks focused on redefining cooperation priorities in light of shifting regional alliances, particularly the deepening confederation between Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.

The diplomatic engagement comes as the AU warns that Mali’s worsening security and humanitarian conditions require greater global solidarity.

Large parts of the central and northern regions continue to face violence from armed groups, despite ongoing institutional reforms and shifting regional alliances.

While Mali’s suspension remains in place, the AU says it aims to maintain active political and technical engagement to prevent further isolation.

The approach is intended to support the country’s transition process, bolster security cooperation, and sustain dialogue at a moment when the broader Sahel is confronting rapidly evolving military and political dynamics.
