Benin Launches €45 Million Solar Project to Power 50,000 Homes

Benin has unveiled a €45 million (29.51 billion CFA francs) solar energy program led by Axian Energy in partnership with Sika Capital, aimed at powering around 50,000 households and advancing the country’s energy strategy.

The project will see the construction of four solar power plants in Bohicon, Parakou, Djougou, and Natitingou, with a combined capacity of 50 MWac.

Backed by €35 million in financing from international development institutions and supported by the Beninese government, the initiative seeks to expand renewable energy use to 30% by 2030.

National entities SBPE and SBEE will oversee integration into the grid under the Ministries of Energy and Finance.

The project is expected to ease power shortages, diversify energy sources, and reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels, while also boosting economic growth and investment attractiveness.

Beyond addressing immediate electricity needs, it aligns with Benin’s broader goal of accelerating its energy transition and improving energy security.

Authorities say the move will not only modernize public services and support industrial growth but also create opportunities for younger generations by providing cleaner, more stable, and sustainable energy.
