Benin’s President Talon Rules Out Third Term Bid Ahead of 2026 Elections

Beninese President Patrice Talon has officially confirmed he will not seek a third term in office when his second five-year mandate ends, despite growing calls from some allies and sections of the public.

According to his spokesperson Wilfried Léandre Houngbédji, Talon has consistently rejected suggestions to amend the constitution to extend his time in power, emphasizing that national development should not be sacrificed for personal ambition.

The president believes capable leaders will emerge to continue the country’s progress, and that democratic stability is best maintained by respecting term limits.

With the presidential election set for April 2026, no official candidates have yet been declared by either the ruling party or the opposition.

However, names like Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni and politician Joseph Djogbénou are being circulated as possible contenders.

Meanwhile, the opposition—particularly the Democrats party led by former President Boni Yayi—is working to unite behind a single candidate to boost its chances.

This pre-election period is expected to shape the political landscape ahead of what many hope will be a peaceful and transparent vote.
