Burkina Faso Dissolves All Political Parties in Landmark Legislative Decision

Burkina Faso’s Transitional Legislative Assembly has unanimously adopted a bill dissolving all political parties and political formations, signaling a major shift in the country’s political landscape.

The law, approved on Monday by all 69 voting members of the Assembly, repeals the 2001 legislation governing political parties as well as the 2009 law on party financing, electoral campaigns, and the legal status of the political opposition.

Authorities say the move reflects the transitional government’s determination to rebuild state institutions and restructure political life.

According to the executive, past legal frameworks encouraged the emergence of numerous parties lacking clear ideology, popular support, or strong local presence, contributing to declining public confidence in political institutions.

The repeal is intended to pave the way for a new political framework better aligned with Burkina Faso’s socio-cultural realities, national unity objectives, and ongoing security challenges.

The bill, endorsed by the Council of Ministers on January 29, 2026, is presented as a key step in the broader state-building process led by the transitional authorities.
