The Burkinabe government has approved two decrees formally granting the status of Martyr of the Nation to 454 individuals and Disabled of the Nation to 87 others, in line with a 2022 law establishing these honorary distinctions.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the Council of Ministers as part of the implementation of legislation adopted in June 2022 to provide a legal framework for recognizing citizens who made significant sacrifices in service to the country.
Authorities said the measures come within a broader socio-political and security context marked by acts of courage carried out in defense of the nation, often at great personal risk.
By conferring these statuses, the government aims to officially acknowledge the bravery and commitment of those honored, underscoring national gratitude for their contributions to safeguarding the state’s interests.
