Burkinabe President Captain Ibrahim Traoré has directed all public institutions to withdraw from the capital of Western media outlets and terminate related subscription contracts, as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s information sovereignty.
The directive was issued during the flag-raising ceremony marking the second phase of the National Days of Patriotic Commitment and Citizen Participation (JEPPC), an initiative promoting civic responsibility and national pride.
In his address, President Traoré paid tribute to African communicators, notably the African Universities of Communication in Ouagadougou (UACO), as well as the “BIR-C” — Bloggers, Influencers, and Citizen Reporters — and the “Wayiyans” for countering what he described as “imperialist narratives” propagated by Western media.
The Presidency stated that Traoré urged Africans to disengage from foreign media platforms that they “finance through investments and subscriptions,” but which “harm their image and interests.”
The move aligns with Burkina Faso’s broader push for full sovereignty — political, economic, and informational — under Captain Traoré’s leadership. Activities marking the second phase of the JEPPC are ongoing across the country.
