Burkina Faso Unveils $70bn CFA Mega Hospital as Traoré Pushes Health Sovereignty Agenda

Burkina Faso has inaugurated the Pala University Hospital Center and its Radiotherapy Centre in Bobo-Dioulasso, marking a major boost for the country’s healthcare system.

President Captain Ibrahim Traoré officially opened the ultra-modern facility, built at a cost exceeding 70 billion CFA francs through a strategic partnership with China.

The hospital, described by the Head of State as a symbol of strong bilateral cooperation beyond geopolitical interests, has a 500-bed capacity and is equipped with cutting-edge medical technology.

Health Minister Dr. Robert Lucien Jean-Claude Kargougou highlighted the installation of an interventional brain and cardiovascular imaging suite using Siemens Pheno Artis technology, the first of its kind in the sub-region.

The adjoining Radiotherapy Centre, constructed with support from Austrian cooperation, is expected to significantly improve cancer treatment and reduce the need for expensive medical evacuations abroad.

President Traoré also announced plans to replicate the Pala model nationwide, with nine additional university hospitals to be built, starting with a new facility in Fada N’Gourma.
