Burkinabe Government Suspends International NGO for Unauthorized Data Collection

The government of Burkina Faso has suspended the operations of the International NGO Safety Organization (INSO) for a period of three months, renewable, over unauthorized collection of sensitive data.

The decision, announced by Minister of Territorial Administration Émile Zerbo, marks part of a broader crackdown on foreign NGOs operating in the country.

Authorities accuse INSO of engaging in activities beyond its humanitarian mandate by gathering data without prior approval, a move deemed incompatible with national regulations.

This suspension follows recent reforms aimed at tightening control over civil society organizations.

A new law on freedom of association now mandates all associations to submit detailed financial documentation—including budgets, annual accounts, and reports—to the relevant ministries.

The legislation seeks to enhance transparency and combat illicit financing, especially in the context of money laundering and terrorism-related threats.
