Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno has announced plans to grant presidential pardons to several convicted citizens, describing the measure as an effort to promote national reconciliation.
The announcement was made in his address to the nation on the eve of Chad’s 66th independence anniversary. The president did not specify the number or identities of those who will benefit.
The decision comes amid criticism over the imprisonment of opposition figures, including former Prime Minister Succès Masra, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison in August 2025, and eight opposition leaders sentenced to eight years in May 2026.
President Déby also called for greater efforts to prevent intercommunal conflicts and urged traditional leaders, religious authorities and political actors to help resolve tensions.He reaffirmed government priorities including fighting corruption, improving access to water and electricity, strengthening education and healthcare, and advancing decentralization.
The president said national unity, discipline and cohesion remain essential to Chad’s development, while highlighting the role of young people, women and the diaspora in building the country.
