Chadian Opposition Leader Suspends Hunger Strike Amid Health Fears

Chadian opposition leader Succès Masra has ended his seven-day hunger strike in prison following urgent medical advice from his doctor.

Detained since May 16, 2025, the former Prime Minister and leader of the Les Transformateurs party began the fast to protest what he described as unjust imprisonment and to express solidarity with the Chadian people.

His fragile health condition, compounded by complete abstention from food, water, and medication under austere conditions, prompted serious concern and led to the decision to resume treatment.

Masra’s legal team continues to condemn what they call serious human rights violations, including arrest without warrant, unauthorized searches, and unlawful extension of police custody.

They also allege falsification of documents by judicial authorities and denounce the June 19 court decision rejecting Masra’s legal challenges as a denial of justice.

The lawyers highlighted nationwide support for Masra, including dramatic protests by women and his mother’s public involvement, while urging calm and sustained mobilization for rule of law in Chad.
