Chad’s Electoral Commission Advances Legislative and Local Election Preparations

The National Agency for Elections (ANGE) in Chad has published provisional candidate lists for the upcoming legislative and local elections, moving the electoral process forward.

Following the release of the legislative candidate lists, a five-day window from November 13 to 18, 2024, has been opened for appeals.

Candidates or parties wishing to contest these lists can submit their appeals to the Constitutional Council, district courts, or Supreme Court.

For the legislative elections, 179 political parties or coalitions have fielded 1,321 candidates, of whom 36.6% are women. After review, 1,274 candidacies were validated, while 46 were disqualified due to non-compliance.

In provincial elections, 1,260 candidates from 134 parties or groups are competing, with women making up 34.8% of the pool. Of these, 1,157 files met the criteria.

For local elections, 93 parties or groups have proposed 6,156 candidates, including 34.2% women, all of whom were approved.

For the diaspora, which is eligible only in legislative elections, 24 candidates representing 16 parties, with 12.5% women, were examined, resulting in 18 accepted applications.

The Constitutional Council will address appeals related to the legislative elections, while provincial and municipal election appeals will be managed by district courts, with the possibility of escalation to the Supreme Court.

Rejected candidates have until November 18 to submit their appeals.
