Chad’s Human Rights Body Warns Against Reinstating Death Penalty

Chad’s National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) has raised alarm over attempts to reintroduce the death penalty, stressing that the country must uphold its 2020 decision to abolish capital punishment for all crimes, including terrorism.

While acknowledging public outrage over rising insecurity and violent crimes, the Commission insisted that the death penalty negates the fundamental right to life and does not serve as a stronger deterrent than life imprisonment.

The CNDH urged authorities to focus on strengthening judicial and police institutions while addressing the root causes of crime instead of resorting to what it described as cruel and inhuman punishments.

It called for reforms to make the justice system more effective, ensure fair trials, and protect human rights.

The body further appealed for calm, encouraging a constructive national debate that prioritizes lasting solutions within the framework of the rule of law.
