Chad’s Ombudsman Seeks Presidential Pardon for 35 Convicted Armed Group Members

Following the sentencing of 35 individuals to 20 years in prison for undermining the constitutional order, Chad’s Ombudsman, Saleh Kebzabo, has announced plans to seek a presidential pardon on their behalf in the interest of national reconciliation.

The convicted individuals, described as members of the Revolutionary Movement for Total Peace in Chad (MRPTT), were arrested on May 15, 2023, near the Chadian-Central African border and sentenced by the Moundou criminal court on June 24.

In a statement released on June 28, Kebzabo emphasized his office’s commitment to monitoring the case to ensure due process and prevent judicial delays.

He noted that the legal avenues for appeal remain open, but added that, if the convictions are upheld, his institution will formally request clemency for those seeking it.

The move he says, aligns with President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno’s policy of national unity and reconciliation.
