Five worshippers were killed and 35 others injured after a suspected suicide bomber detonated an explosive inside a mosque in Maiduguri, the capital of Nigeria’s Borno State, during evening prayers on Wednesday.
The attack occurred at the Al-Adum mosque around 6 p.m. as worshippers gathered, triggering panic and chaos as victims were rushed to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and the State Specialist Hospital.
Police confirmed the casualty figures, sealed off the area, and deployed explosive ordnance disposal teams to conduct sweeping operations, while investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which comes amid renewed security concerns in Nigeria’s northeast, a region plagued by a 15-year insurgency led by Boko Haram and its ISWAP faction. Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum strongly condemned the bombing, urging increased vigilance at places of worship and public spaces, particularly during the festive season.
Authorities have called on residents to remain calm but alert, as security forces intensify efforts to prevent further attacks in a region frequently targeted by extremist violence against civilians.
