The East African Community (EAC) heads of state held an emergency virtual summit today in response to rising tensions in Eastern DR Congo.
The discussions, chaired by Kenyan President William Ruto, called for an immediate ceasefire and the de-escalation of regional divisions and mounting diplomatic tensions, particularly between Rwanda and South Africa.
Earlier, Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi addressed the nation, denouncing what he described as “aggression” by Rwanda through the M23 rebel group. He accused Kigali of violating DRC’s sovereignty and fueling instability in the country’s east.
In response, Tshisekedi appointed Major General Evariste Somo Kakule as military governor of North Kivu to strengthen the Congolese Armed Forces’ (FARDC) operations.
As diplomatic tensions reach new heights, fighting on the ground has intensified. The M23 rebels have advanced, capturing several strategic locations around Goma, the capital of North Kivu.
