The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU) have declared that Guinea’s September 21 constitutional referendum was conducted successfully, with electoral staff and institutions performing their duties effectively.
A joint mission of 50 experts, split evenly between the two organizations, observed voting across all eight administrative regions, covering 389 polling stations.
The observers also held meetings with Guinean authorities, the General Directorate of Elections, the Supreme Court, civil society groups, and international partners engaged in the electoral process.
Provisional results announced by Minister of Territorial Administration Ibrahima Kalil Condé show that 89.38% of voters backed the new Constitution, with 5,135,951 ballots cast in favor and 610,376 against, out of more than 5.7 million valid votes.
Voter turnout reached 86.42%, across 16,722 polling stations and 22,681 operational offices.
The results will be submitted to the Supreme Court for final validation.
ECOWAS and the AU called on international partners to continue supporting Guinea’s transition in order to strengthen peace, security, and stability ahead of a full return to constitutional order.
