ECOWAS Energy Forum in Banjul Pushes Green Hydrogen for Regional Transition

The 10th ECOWAS Sustainable Energy Forum (ESEF 2025) has concluded in Banjul, bringing together ministers, experts, civil society, and development partners to chart pathways toward universal access to sustainable energy in the sub region. Held alongside the 50th anniversary of ECOWAS and the 15th anniversary of the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), the two-day event focused on advancing the regional electricity market, promoting clean mobility, strengthening the water-energy-agriculture nexus, and expanding access to clean cooking solutions.

Green hydrogen emerged as a central theme, highlighted as a transformative opportunity for the sub region’s energy future. Participants agreed on the importance of pilot projects, innovative financing, and regional cooperation to unlock this potential.

The forum concluded with an awards ceremony celebrating innovation in sustainable development, while ECREEE leadership and Gambian authorities reaffirmed that clean energy remains a critical driver of resilience and inclusive growth across the sub region.
