Equatorial Guinea Court Hands Prison Term to President’s Son for Illegally Selling National Plane

A court in Equatorial Guinea has sentenced Ruslan Obiang Nsue, son of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, for the unauthorized sale of a plane owned by the national airline, according to a court official.

The Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that Obiang Nsue, 50, a former director of the national carrier Ceiba Intercontinental, must serve six years in prison unless he reimburses the state for the sold aircraft, Supreme Court press director Hilario Mitogo said via WhatsApp.

Obiang Nsue was found guilty of selling an the aircraft to a Spanish company and keeping the proceeds. He had been placed under house arrest in 2023 by order of his half-brother, Vice-President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, who is also a son of the president.

The court cleared him of separate charges, including embezzlement and abuse of office. In addition to his role at the national airline, Obiang Nsue has previously served as secretary of state for sports and youth.
