Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has received a delegation from Ethiopia seeking to learn from the country’s electoral processes and management practices.
The visiting team, comprising officials from the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) and the Coalition of Ethiopian Civil Society Organizations for Elections (CECOE), will spend a week in Nigeria engaging in a series of technical sessions hosted by INEC.
Outgoing Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu highlighted the visit as an opportunity for mutual learning between Africa’s two most populous nations, noting their shared multi-ethnic, multi-religious, and federal governance structures.
INEC has scheduled nine technical sessions for the Ethiopian delegation, focusing on key areas such as voter registration technologies, election monitoring, strategic planning, and the inclusion of displaced persons in electoral processes.
Media representatives and members of the Inter-Party Consultative Council will also join some sessions to broaden discussions.
The visit coincides with ongoing voter registration in the Federal Capital Territory ahead of Nigeria’s February 2026 regional council elections.
The Ethiopian officials commended INEC’s transparency and technological innovations, expressing interest in adapting Nigeria’s experience in civic education and digital electoral reforms to strengthen their own institutions.
