Severe flooding triggered by heavy rains has killed 47 people, injured 70, and displaced more than 56,000 across Niger, according to figures from the General Directorate of Civil Protection (DGPC) reported by the Niger Press Agency.
The floods, recorded since the start of the rainy season, have affected 7,754 households—equivalent to 56,730 people—across 339 neighborhoods and villages in 78 municipalities spanning 46 departments.
Authorities said the victims include 30 people who died in building collapses and 17 who drowned, while 257 livestock were also lost.
The disaster adds to recurring flood challenges in Niger, where the government previously launched a 12 billion CFA franc support program to assist families impacted by the 2024 floods.
