The Generational Rights Protection Society has suspended its planned protest scheduled for today, Tuesday, April 29.
The demonstration, which began on Monday, April 28, was aimed at demanding urgent government action against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
The decision to suspend the protest followed a closed-door meeting between the group and the Accra Police Command. According to the group, police requested a temporary halt to allow for further discussions and to agree on a new date.
Speaking to the press after the meeting, co-convener Kwame Appiah-Kubi stated that although the protest had been postponed, the group believes its objectives had already been met.
Galamsey continues to pose a serious threat to Ghana’s environment, depleting natural resources, contaminating water bodies, and endangering ecosystems across the country.
