Gambia Appeals Acquittal in Police Murder Case

The government of The Gambia has filed an appeal against the acquittal of Ousainou Bojang and Amie Bojang in a high-profile case involving the two police officers, citing errors in the trial court’s assessment of evidence.

The appeal, lodged before the Court of Appeal, challenges the High Court’s March 30 ruling, which cleared the defendants of multiple charges, including murder, terrorism, attempted murder, and aggravated assault linked to a deadly September 2023 attack at the Sukuta-Jabang intersection.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, the State is seeking the annulment of the acquittals and a retrial that could lead to convictions proportionate to the gravity of the alleged crimes.

While reaffirming respect for judicial independence, authorities described the move as a “solemn duty” to the victims—officers Sang J. Gomez and Pateh M. Jallow—and the wider public.

The prosecution has also urged restraint as the legal process continues, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the integrity of the appeal proceedings.
