Ghana and Nigeria Absent as Trump Hosts Five African Presidents at White House Summit

The absence of Ghanaian and Nigerian presidents from a recent White House summit has sparked concern across the subregion, as U.S. President Donald Trump hosted five African leaders to promote economic cooperation and regional peace.

Attending meeting were Presidents Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El-Ghazouani of Mauritania, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema of Gabon, Joseph Boakai of Liberia, and Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau.

The summit emphasized “win-win” partnerships, with Trump praising Africa’s resource wealth and reaffirming U.S. support for peacebuilding efforts, including the recent peace deal between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda.

Each leader presented investment opportunities in their respective countries, with Senegal proposing a digital city in Dakar and inviting U.S. investment in tourism, while Gabon called for military support against piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.

Liberia and Mauritania stressed the need for peace to foster development, and Guinea-Bissau highlighted diplomatic efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war.

The summit ended with Trump hinting at a future visit to Africa and expressing openness to suggestions that he be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, while reiterating that peace is the foundation for prosperity.
