The Government of Ghana has criticised the military takeover in Guinea-Bissau, warning that the action represents a serious breach of democratic norms and threatens stability in the region.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Accra said it was “deeply concerned” by the intervention of Guinea-Bissau’s armed forces, noting that the move disrupted the electoral process that followed the country’s presidential and legislative elections on 23 November.
According to the statement, the coup has derailed the democratic expectations of the Guinean-Bissau electorate and halted the release of official results, which had been scheduled for 27 November.
Ghana urged all actors in the crisis to pursue any electoral disputes through peaceful, transparent and legally recognised mechanisms.
The government called for the swift restoration of constitutional order, stressing that the rights and safety of both citizens and foreign residents must be protected.
Accra also expressed particular concern for the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission deployed in Guinea-Bissau. Ghana insisted that the personnel’s freedom of movement and security must be guaranteed without delay.
The government appealed to the people of Guinea-Bissau to remain calm and refrain from actions that could inflame tensions.
